She holds a Masters of Law from the University of Cambridge, undergraduate degrees in law and commerce from Victoria University, New Zealand, and was a finalist for the NSW Women Lawyers’ Association ‘Woman Lawyer of the Year’. Lisa is also a member of the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement, a member and voluntary grief support worker for the National Association for Loss and Grief, a registered counsellor with the Australian Counselling Association, and has contributed to Diversity Council Australia podcasts about grief support in the workplace. His musical background is as a violinist and educator, having studied violin with Josette Esquedin-Morgan and Barbara Jane Gilby. He is an alumnus of the University of Cambridge and the ANU. His latest book NUKED: the Submarine Fiasco that Sank Australia’s Sovereignty won the 2024 Walkley Award. Fowler began his journalism career in the UK, where he worked for the London Evening News. He has been the chief of staff and acting foreign editor of The Australian newspaper. He wrote The Most Dangerous Man in the World , the story of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks, in 2011, updated in 2012 and 2020. Fowler first interviewed Assange for Foreign Correspondent in 2010, for which the program won the New York Festival Gold Medal. This is Fowler’s fourth book. His two others are The War on Journalism (2015) and Shooting the Messenger: Criminalising Journalism (2017). He is a winner of the United Nations Peace Prize. In 2003, while working in a large public hospital in Melbourne, Heather was introduced to an elderly gentleman who 'might just have a story worth telling'. The day she met Lale Sokolov changed both their lives. Lale's story formed the basis for The Tattooist of Auschwitz and the follow-up novel, Cilka's Journey. In 2021 she published the phenomenal conclusion to the Tattooist trilogy, Three Sisters, after being asked to tell the story of three Holocaust survivors who knew Lale from their time in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Hawke: A Biography, is considered one of the finest examples of political biography in Australia. Prior to that, she wrote Mediator, A Biography of Sir Richard Kirby, which was for many years used as a text for teaching industrial relations. Her novels include Monkeys in the Dark, set in Indonesia and a university text; Turtle Beach, set in Malaysia and made into a feature movie; Winter in Jerusalem, winner of the Australasian division of the Commonwealth Literature Award; and White Eye, published in 1993, a novel she personally disliked, that foretold a global pandemic from a laboratory-created bug. Her books have won a host of literary prizes. She also wrote the controversial essays On Lust and On Longing and a series on King Henry II of England and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine. Her latest novel, a crime fiction with a twist entitled The Bunny Club, will be launched at the Manly Writers’ Festival on March 28th.
