Tumut-born Kim Carr was a secondary school teacher from a blue- collar family drawn to politics by his interest in science and education.

He avoided student politics to join the ALP at 19, was elected as a Senator for Victoria in 1993, retired in 2022, and was one of the most influential figures in the Victorian Left faction. He held ministerial positions under the Rudd, Gillard, and Rudd governments in Innovation, Science, Higher Education, and Manufacturing, among others. His autobiography, A Long March, chronicles three decades of Labor history—often tumultuous and certainly nation-changing—from the trenches to the Cabinet Room. In a federal election year, Kim’s book also comprehensively analyses the current political landscape and how democracy can remain relevant in 21st-century Australia.

Host: Helen Vatsikopoulos
