When French President Emmanuel Macron spoke those words in response to a question about Australia’s cancelled submarine deal with France, it was clear that the fallout from the decision was nuclear in more ways than one. Author Andrew Fowler reveals what drove Australia to shift from France to its traditional allies, the USA and UK, in signing the AUKUS deal. By interviewing sources in Paris, London,
Washington, and Canberra, Fowler assembles the narrative that led to Australia choosing a nuclear-powered US submarine, which some experts believe seriously jeopardises Australia’s ability to defend itself. Nuked—The Submarine Fiasco that Sank Australia’s Sovereignty won the 2024 Walkley Book Award.

Host: Mark Corcoran
